HAVING just read your article “Families fear cut to lifeline’’. I feel so outraged I had to put pen to paper.
Obviously the city council have the audacity to try and sell the idea that 'they can do things in different ways' as a positive but having looked into the support and services the Southampton Voluntary Services provide, even I can see there is no need to do anything differently. I don’t sit in a nice office, and get a nice wage by the people who put me there. This is just another cheap attempt by council officials to cut services where they are desperately needed. The city council’s contribution is a mere £104,000 per year, small change when you consider Southampton City Council spend £2.27 million on publicity.
The people of Southampton are not interested in making the fat cats fatter. We are interested in the flesh and bones of our society.
The SVS will have a much greater impact on our society for many years to come, assisting in supporting families in times of need. Many of these people will go on to contribute positively to our city, come off benefits, having retrained to gain confidence and careers, none of this would be facilitated without the support of the SVS.
As Di Barnes has pointed out many of these families will be left in the dark until something happens and social services are called in.
Do the council really want to be responsible for children taken into care? City councillors are simply playing a game they are very good at. It’s called pass the buck!
