How many readers remember when road works would mean a slight delay but the road was NOT closed completely?

I expect, most of us. The days of a man each end of a stretch of road being repaired holding a lolly pop ‘stop/go’ sign. Later to be replaced by temporary traffic lights which became automated.

The work was done in small sections at a time so that traffic could still use that road. I do not recall motorist ever really complaining especially when advance notices were on display advising of possible hold ups.

But instead of that, the section of road between Burley Fire Station and Burley Street has been totally closed off, for 6-7 weeks! It only has ‘C’ classification!

Instead traffic has been diverted around Forest Road, which is almost a single track with lorries having to go via Bransgore.

A number of Burley shops are shut until mid February, although the repairs may not be finished until March.

Why did not the Hampshire County Councillor fight harder to keep Burley open, as they are responsible for road maintenance.

I would hope that the village traders get a rate rebate and I feel sorry for those who are paying rents, to end up with next to no customers through no fault of their own.

I also wonder how many coaches will not visit Burley when the (in my view) unnecessary pinch points become permanent.
