I WONDER whether or not Councillor Don Thomas (letters January 16) has given much thought to possible alternatives to our Royal Family becoming head of state.

Can he honestly imagine a person such as Gordon Brown being given absolutely power over all our destinies as a president (or Dictator) “God help us all’’.

The fact that he has as a councillor revealed himself as a Non-Royalist or Republican should surely give some indication as to the real aims of the Labour Party.

Of course we all realise the Royal Family are far from perfect and some of them still require a little growing up, in other words they are human, which can’t be a bad thing.

The business of Prince Harry’s comment regarding an Army comrade is nothing more than a blown up storm in a teacup.

Haven’t we always had alternative names or abbreviations for many nationalities such as Jock for the Scots, Taffy for the Welsh and Paddy for the Irish?

Don’t we refer to the Americans as Yanks regardless of which part of the USA they hail from.

Don't we always refer to our Australian cousins as Ausies and they in turn call us Pommies, the Americans in turn refer to us as Limeys but who really cares, they are only names.

So come off it Don Thomas, you know as well as the rest of us there was no evil intent with the remark, wrong though it may, or may not have been.

Let’s be honest about this country, political correctness has robbed us of many of our liberties, freedom of speech being one of them, and multi-culturalism has not exactly proved itself a bed of roses.

In my view the Royal Family, with maybe the exception of Prince Charles do not get themselves involved enough in politics and maybe if they did, this country would not be in the state it finds itself today.
