THE ‘Go Bananas’ event pictured in the Echo on Saturday March 7 was a great example of cooperation between two very different shops in Shirley.
It was all part of Fairtrade Fortnight and involved Sainsburys Supermarket and the much smaller Fair Trade Shop just across the High Street from them.
They joined together to help towards establishing a world record for the number of Fairtrade bananas eaten during a 24 hour period.
‘We don’t normally sell bananas but Sainsburys kindly provided us with some’ says Amna Bartholomew the Fair Trade Shop manager, ‘so it was appropriate for Sainsburys manager to be in the photo with the crowd of helpers and customers in front of the Fair Trade Shop – and the total of bananas eaten through our shop was 280! This has been registered with the Fairtrade Foundation. The worldwide total is yet to be announced.
