IN 2009 the Daily Echo published letters from some relatives of the First World War fallen who are named on Southampton cenotaph.
Although having no personal connection with the memorial, as a family history researcher I felt it was very important to remember not only the names but also the stories of the men and women whose names are engraved on the Cenotaph and the experiences of their families.
The letter to the Echo from A F Cotton in particular inspired me to research the names with the aim of setting up a virtual memorial that could be accessed by families, schools and anyone worldwide with an interest in the cenotaph.
Southampton Solent University has been giving significant support by developing the virtual memorial website that will be launched early next year, and by students helping by linking their own projects to the cenotaph. We are also working in collaboration with other groups which have or are carrying out similar research, especially the Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery and Highfield History.
Whilst there is a lot of information online and in local archives it is really the experience and memories of families and others that can best tell the stories that will bring to life the names on the cenotaph and the additional names on the memorial walls. If you are a relative of those named on the cenotaph or have an interest in the cenotaph we would welcome contact with you. I can be contacted on southampton.cenotaph@hotmail.co.uk or by mobile on 07767491170.
You can also keep informed about the project and give your comments and ideas on the Facebook group Southampton Cenotaph Families and Friends.
