REGARDING the legal requirements of the use of mobility scooters correspondent Mr J Allen is correct in stating that 8mph scooters require registration with the DVLA but unfortunately there is no requirement for them to be insured.
They do not have to display registration plates but they must show the tax disc.
Several companies offer special insurance which offer very adequate third party cover but it is optional and not compulsory. All responsible mobility scooter dealers can offer the insurance and also advise any scooter owner of their legal obligations. All responsible scooter owners should take out third party insurance, even if it is not a legal requirement at the moment.
