THIS is the time of year when one’s memories of wartime years are revived, but nevertheless they are always in one’s mind at various times.
We have articles in the press complaining of the lack of respect for members of both the Royal Navy and particularily members of the merchant navy serving on ships on the Russian convoys, because of there being no medal to mark the occasion.
I lost a young friend, serving as what I think was called an apprentice, training to be a merchant navy officer, and from him I knew how terrible it was to be on those convoys.
A bit late for a medal perhaps, but better late than never.
