I’M afraid a vital point has been missed by Name and Address Supplied (“Would you swap places with me?”, Letters, November 11) regarding Blue Badge drivers.
This obviously disabled person is upset because it was suggested they should pay to park their vehicles, the same as fit and healthy drivers.
The first point missed is the glaring fact that disabled badges are the most abused section of the National Health Service so the distribution and granting of such badged should be much more closely monitored.
The second point is that “disabled”
does not necessarily mean “lack of cash”, so shouldn’t badges be means tested as most other things are where benefits are concerned?
The idea of special car parks for the disabled is a non-starter because the very point of the badge is to allow the holder to park as near to the particular point they wish to go to without walking too far.
Very little is free in this day and age and although I’m not a keen supporter of means testing above actual income, the fairest way would be to charge a nominal yearly fee for those not already on benefits and all holders to undergo a yearly health and wealth reassessment. That at least would immediately cut out all the phoney chancers and duplicates.
