I WISH to write in support of the Lest We Forget Campaign defending Britain’s war memorials.
As the 100th anniversary of the First World War approaches the rules of the National Lottery Heritage Fund need to be altered so that the grants of less than £3,000 can be administered as under the current rules many smaller projects are not covered. There should also be a named official in each area responsible for the memorial.
With the large increase in raids on memorials by scrap metal thieves, scrap metal dealers need to be licensed and sellers of scrap metal should be obliged to provide satisfactory identification.
So far 22 MPs have signed an Early Day Motion in support of these proposals and let us hope John Denham MP and Alan Whitehead MP join them.
My own MP Sir George Young will not sign them as he regards them as devalued currency, but how wrong he is in this case!
Let us hope more than 150-200 MPs sign it so there is a thorough and vigorous debate.
RICHARD J KIDD, Andover.
