CORRESPONDENT PJ House “EU Propaganda” (Letters, November 15) claims that the EU hasn’t kept the peace in Europe for the last 50 years but the first 50 years of 20th century European history and before would suggest otherwise.
Military stand-off hasn’t prevented European conflict before and the only real antidote to conflict is common interest which is what the EU’s founding fathers were about.
But let us address the real agenda of UKIP and other Europhobes. When they say they are happy with a free trade area but not with the loss of sovereignty, what they really mean is that they prefer a capitalist’s paradise of zero regulation, where countries compete by continually lowering taxes, eroding wages, increasing working hours abolishing safety regulations and reducing consumer protection.
In other words the freedom of private corporations and rich owners to do what they please. That would be the state of the nation outside the EU opting for the harsh world of globalisation. An option which UKIP say makes sense amounts to turkeys voting for Christmas.
