I AM writing in answer to the article published in the Daily Echo on November 21 and the letter from Andrea Bright (November 24) about Brookwood Cemetery.
Sadly I lost my husband three years ago. We chose Brookwood Cemetery in Eastleigh as I have other relatives buried there and it has always been kept so nice, so when my husband died I purchased a double plot and paid for a gravestone surround.
Over the past year I have noticed more and more people letting their dogs run loose. I was there alone one day when a dog was running loose and I was scared as it was the type to be muzzled and I couldn’t see anyone around when the dog came running over.
Then the last time I was there I had to clean a pile of dog muck off the stones on top of my husband’s grave. I rang the council to inform them about this.
Graves are not cheap and how would these dog walkers like it if it was their family laying at rest and they found people were letting dogs run around the graves doing their business? More and more people are letting their dogs off the lead as they come in the gate and the dog and owner go different ways.
There is Fleming Park and Eastleigh Rec on either side of the cemetery. Why not take your dog there, where it wouldn’t upset people who are already suffering with losing a loved one? The staff at Eastleigh Cemetery do a marvellous job but they cannot check every family’s grave.
Not all people are like Andrea Bright and clean up after their dogs I can assure you. On my husband’s birthday all our family went and my son-in-law had to clean off my daughter’s shoes as she was attending to the flowers and stepped in dog muck.
Please, dog walkers, respect this place of rest for those who have passed away and their families.
Eastleigh has parks, woods and wildlife parks to walk your dogs.
ROSE TIMMS, Eastleigh.
