REGARDING the item on the ‘All Conquering Saints’ Speedway team of the early ’60s (Daily Echo, November 19), of which I was a member.

In the interest of historical accuracy I would make the point that Barry Briggs was in fact World Speedway Champion on FOUR occasions not THREE as stated. To elucidate Barry was champion in 1957 & 1958 while riding for the Mighty Wimbledon Dons and again in 1964 and 1966 riding for the Swindon Robins.

He was runner-up twice in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Show in 1964 and 1966, a magnificent achievement which the Beeb itself condescended to acknowledge.

Barry features as the subject on the Eamon Andrews This is Your Life show also for the BBC, was awarded the MBE making him a Southampton sporting legend on par with Saints Football Club’s greatest ever player, the irrepressible Terry Paine.

Apart from winning the National League (Div 1) title in 1962 the Speedway Saints also beat Oxford in the KO Cup Final in 1963 the last year at the old Banister Court Sports Stadium before it was sold for redevelopment.
