READING about Southampton City Council leader Councillor Royston Smith being fined for driving without insurance, I am astonished at the inconsistency with which the road safety law is applied.

The Channel 5 series Police Interceptors frequently shows Essex Police impounding vehicles being driven without insurance, yet Mr Smith was allowed to continue with his journey, having been given a fine that represents a very small proportion of his income. Are the Essex culprits being treated more harshly because they are generally younger, have less money, and are not in positions of power?

The Tories, who never miss an opportunity to bang the law and order drum, need to understand that the law is only effective if it applies to everyone equally. This is particularly important with road safety. Driving without insurance is a danger to all of society and should be treated as such.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Councillor Smith’s car was in fact towed away following this incident.
