I HATE to break it to M Clements (“Pedestrians’ road foolishness”, Letters, December 5) but perhaps a re-read of the Highway Code is in order?
First of all there is rule 207 (Particularly vulnerable pedestrians – eg children).
Rule 206 is of particular importance to the described situation. When turning into side roads we are supposed to give pedestrians priority, especially if they are already engaged in the act of crossing.
There is no law stating that pedestrians should cross at a pedestrian crossing only when the green man is lit. They have every right to ignore signalled crossings and make their own judgement.
Many pedestrian crossings are designed with the motorist in mind rather than the pedestrian, and as a consequence many elderly and disabled people struggle to cross within the allotted time.
Many times you can press the button at signalled crossings and find yourself waiting, and waiting... and you get the point.
